Greater Waco Sports Commission Making Progress

Waco, TX, September 30, 2015: Will Phipps started this week as the Executive Director and President of the newly formed Greater Waco Sports Commission (GWSC). Originally from Lubbock before getting an undergraduate degree from Baylor and graduate degree from Valparaiso, Phipps comes back to Waco by way of Valparaiso University in Indiana. At Valpo Phipps served as the Director of Basketball Operations for Head Coach Bryce Drew. His combination of experience in recruiting, business development, and operations is what attracted the GWSC board. Board Chairman, Rick Tullis stated, “The board was impressed not only with Will’s ability to sell Waco, but also his ability to build an organization from scratch.”

After announcing their search for an Executive Director this summer, the GWSC received 16 resumes from individuals inside and outside of the community. Board Secretary, Tom Hill indicated, “We were amazed at the number of high quality candidates that wanted this position and it came down to a handful of very competitive finalist.” The final decision was made at the end of July and Mr. Phipps began his first day on the job September 28th.

Mr. Phipps will spend the next few weeks getting the operations side of the GWSC up and running. “The Board has done a great job creating collaborative partnerships with the City, County, Chamber, CVB, and others, and this has paved the way in what should be a quick start-up.”, said Phipps. For now the GWSC will accept the Greater Waco Chamber of Commerce’s invitation to house Mr. Phipps in their offices. Board Vice-Chair, Todd Behringer remarked, “The collaboration with the Chamber is key and having Will in the building will help him connect with current and potential sporting event producers more quickly.”

The Greater Waco Sports Commission in an independent non-profit organization that has been created to identify and attract new sports events while enhancing and retaining existing events to generate positive economic impact and enhance quality of life in McLennan County. The vision is that the Greater Waco area will realize its incredible potential – due to its community spirit, location, climate, rivers and lake, beautiful parks, and premiere facilities – as the preferred venue for sports in Texas.
