October 2022 | Vol. 6
IRONMAN MONTH
It’s finally here! We’ve been waiting for the great weather and fun that October brings Waco. From October 12-16 there will be thousands of people embarking Waco from all over the world. In our previous years OUR Waco hospitality has shined through and we look to continue that this year.
The Greater Waco Sports Commission is actively assisting in the recruitment of the 2,500 volunteers that are needed to make this week a memorable one. The IRONMAN Foundation has committed $53,000 to grants for non-profit groups that volunteer for the event. If you are a part of a non-profit or know of one that could use fundraising this is the chance to have fun, be inspired by the athletes, create a team building experience and help support a cause you’re passionate about.
Please visit the IRONMAN Volunteer site to see all the opportunities that remain!
TEAM Waco

2022 Beast of the Brazos Recap
The Greater Waco Sports Commission was able to host its 3rd Annual Beast of the Brazos. We had a record breaking number of athletes compete from all over the state. The open water swim from Cameron Park’s Pecan Bottom stretches either 1.2 or 2.4 miles and finishes downtown at Indian Springs Park. This race gives IRONMAN athletes a chance to test the waters before race week in a low pressure but safe environment. Out of 81 survey replies 80 people (99%) said they plan on coming back next year! We’re thankful for these athletes, sponsors, and another great event!
A Word from Dr. Adesina
A concussion is a mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) that is caused by a blow or jolt to the head or body that causes the brain to shake. This disrupts the normal function of the brain and can result in serious side effects. Each year, thousands of children and youth are diagnosed with a concussion.
Symptoms of a concussion can appear immediately after the injury, while others may not show up for several days. Symptoms may last days, weeks, or months. They may be subtle and not obvious. They can have a negative impact on a child’s emotional state. Prompt evaluation by a medical provider with experience in treatment of pediatric &adolescent concussions is important to ensure physical and emotional recovery. At Ascension Medical Group Providence Orthopedics & Sports Medicine, our team offers a comprehensive pediatric & adolescent concussion program with individualized treatment plans so your child can safely return to school and the activities that they love. For appointments, please call 254-752-9638.

Waco Rowing Weekend (Nov 4-6, 2022)
Sub8 is not your typical erg race. This is more than just a single distance time trial on one machine. We chose to step outside the box with “Sub 8” and do something we’ve never done before. You have been chosen to help us unveil this masterpiece. This is an open invite to be part of the beginning of this story.
The race includes individual workouts on the RowErg, the SkiErg and the BikeErg, followed by a final, utilizing all three machines. Each workout is unique in overall format as well as how it is scored. The use of only the Concept2 machine trifecta is bound to unlock all of your power and test your ability to go Sub 8.
Shane Farmer (a featured Indoor Rowing World Championships Emcee) will serve as the Sub8 Emcee, while Waco’s DJ Batman will be serving up the music to keep athletes and fans motivated throughout the event.

Executive Director’s Message
October is a big month for GWSC. In addition to getting ready for all the winter events around the corner, we have the opportunity to host the 2022 IRONMAN Waco Festival. Another huge win this month is renewing our partnerships with many important organizations. The GWSC wants to express its appreciation to the City of Waco and McLennan County for their continued support.
We also have the special honor of adding the City of Robinson and Milo All Day as partners to the sports commission! GWSC is thrilled to have your support and to continue to make an impact in this special community. Thank you so much!
