November 2023 | Vol. 19

Season of Thanks

Mike's Message

Executive Director, Greater Waco Sports Commission

This November, as we celebrate Thanksgiving, we extend our heartfelt gratitude and “Thank You” to over 1,200 volunteers and the support of numerous businesses and organizations that made this month a success.

We also say “Thank You” to all who contributed to the success of the IRONKids and IRONMAN 70.3 Waco events on Oct 14th and 15th. Over 240 young participants and their families enjoyed age-appropriate runs finishing on the Suspension Bridge, while 1,700+ athletes from the U.S. and around the world raced, bringing an economic impact of over $6 million to our community. Additionally, IRONMAN provided $17,000 in grant funds to support our local non-profit volunteers.

All five of our 2023 TEAM Waco representatives, along with a 2022 alumnus, successfully completed the race. A huge “Thank You” to our TEAM Waco sponsors: NVDM, YMCA, Waco CycleBar, Active Therapy Group, Waco Paddle Company, The Bear Mountain, Yoga8, Sigma Swimming, and Ascension Providence. Looking ahead, mark your calendars as applications for TEAM Waco 2024 open on January 1st; check our website for updates.

A Word from Dr. Adesina

Over the past 50 years, there have been dramatic changes in the youth sports culture. One of the biggest changes has been the overall decrease in multisport athletes in middle and high school. This has given rise to the more common single sport athlete who tends to be under increased pressure to specialize early, play year-round and play at a high level. Sports specialization occurs when an athlete decides to focus exclusively on one sport. This increased emphasis on sports specialization has resulted in an increase in overtraining, overuse injuries, and athlete burnout. Here are three general principles that parents should consider with their young athletes.
