TEAM Waco 2024 Relay Team

Shannon Best

Swim & Run

Waco has been home for the last 38 years.  I am married to Les, who supports me on my many adventures.  I am actively serving at Harris Creek in the 50+ Ministry and as a Life Group shepherd, an RN with BSW, and have 9.5 grandkids!

In 2008, I began my running journey. The best part has always been the relationships I have developed with others.  My passion for running continued years later as the Waco Women’s Training program co-director/director. For six years, I have watched this program empower hundreds of women to care for themselves and improve their health.

Additionally, I have struggled with my weight and self-image for most of my adult life.  Three and a half years ago, I took measures to lose weight and have successfully kept it off.  Having a healthy weight has given me the opportunity to enjoy my grandkids and live well.

My goal with TEAM Waco is to inspire others by allowing them to see that the average person can achieve goals and that it is possible to enjoy the second half of life!  I look forward to the ‘team’ aspect of TEAM Waco and am ready to develop meaningful relationships.

As a wife, mother of seven (6 boys and 1 girl) and a grandmother to one grandson, Max, the joy and blessing of my life has been raising our big and active family! My go-to exercise was running which was easiest to do with all my kids.

I have had the opportunity to watch several of my boys train for and participate in IRONMAN events; it has been so inspiring to see the reward for their hard work. As we would cheer them on, I remember noticing the athletes’ ages on their right calf.  I was impressed and motivated by how many were “older” and participating in this kind of sport.

Being in a stage of life where I have time to train, I have learned that training and exercising are better for me when done with community. Cheering on and pushing each other to go beyond what you ever thought you could do gets me fired up! When left to train on my own, I always find ways to take shortcuts, so I really look forward to being a part of the relay team.

My goal is to finish strong with TEAM Waco’s support and encouragement. I hope someone sees the age that will be on my calf and realizes it is not too late to get started.  What a treat it will be to have my kids cheering me on in the process and on race day—maybe even one or two will ride with me!
